This is the fastest improvement to airport security in years and if you have TSA PreCheck plus a valid passport, you can be enrolled today in about five minutes per airline.
What Is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?
TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is a federal opt in program that uses facial recognition to replace the physical ID hand off at the security checkpoint. A camera captures your image, compares it to passport or Global Entry photos already on file with the U.S. government, confirms the match and clears you through. The process takes under 10 seconds. As of April 2026 the program is live at 65 U.S. airports and available through Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
How Does It Work?
You still go through the standard PreCheck lane. Shoes stay on. Laptop stays in the bag. The only thing that changes is the document check step. Instead of handing your ID to a TSA officer, you stand in front of a kiosk camera, it reads your face and you walk. That is it. The whole interaction takes under 10 seconds. A dedicated Touchless ID lane is available at participating airports and it is consistently the shortest line at the checkpoint.
Who Qualifies for TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?
Active TSA PreCheck membership with a Known Traveler Number.- A valid U.S. passport uploaded to your frequent flyer profile with a participating airline.
- An active loyalty account with Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest or United.
- A mobile boarding pass on travel day because the Touchless ID indicator must appear on your digital pass to access the dedicated lane.
You do not need Global Entry to enroll though if you have it your photo is already in the system.
Do You Actually Need This?
If you fly any of these five airlines a few times a year and already have PreCheck, yes. Full stop.
The opt in takes about five minutes per airline and the payoff is immediate. Airport security lines are trending longer headed into the 2026 FIFA World Cup travel surge. Touchless ID users access a dedicated lane that is consistently the shortest at participating airports.
Which Airports Have Touchless ID Right Now?
Airports currently running Touchless ID include Atlanta, Dallas Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Seattle, San Francisco and Washington Reagan National. Airports added in 2026 include Houston Bush Intercontinental, Dulles, Boston Logan, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. The TSA has confirmed 65 total airports in the program as of spring 2026. If you fly out of any major hub, your airport either has it or is receiving it this year.
How to Enroll by Airline
- Delta: Go to your SkyMiles profile on the Fly Delta app or delta.com, store your passport information and Known Traveler Number then opt into Touchless ID. Delta enrolls you once and keeps you active until you choose to opt out.
- American: Log into your AAdvantage account, go to the information and password section, save your Known Traveler Number and passport information then find the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID opt in. American requires annual renewal so set a reminder.
- Alaska: Sign into your Mileage Plan account, add your Known Traveler Number and passport information, go to the Travel Documents area and select the Touchless ID option. Alaska keeps you enrolled until you choose to opt out.
- United: Open the United app, go to your MileagePlus account settings, find TSA PreCheck and travel documents, add your passport info and Known Traveler Number then opt in. United also offers Touchless ID at select bag drop locations.
- Southwest: Log into your Rapid Rewards account in the Southwest app, select TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, scan your passport with your phone, enter your Known Traveler Number and opt in. Southwest requires a mobile boarding pass to access the dedicated lane.
Is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID Safe and Private?
The technology compares biometric templates of your live photo to a pre staged gallery of existing passport or visa photo templates. The TSA is not building a new database from your airport scan. CBP and DHS have used traveler facial biometrics since 2002 and participation in Touchless ID does not change your existing privacy posture in any meaningful way.
FAQ
Does Touchless ID replace my Real ID at the security checkpoint?
No. Even those who opt in must carry a Real ID compliant physical ID and present it if asked by a TSA officer. Touchless ID is a speed layer on top of your existing credentials. It is not a document replacement.
Do I need to enroll separately with each airline?
Yes. Each airline manages its own opt in process through your loyalty account. If you regularly fly Delta and American, you enroll in both. Each enrollment takes about five minutes.
Can plus size women use Touchless ID without any issues?
Yes. The camera captures your image from the neck up and matches it to your passport photo. Body size is not a variable in the facial matching process.
Does TSA Touchless ID work for international customs?
No. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID applies to domestic departure security checkpoints only. Global Entry is the separate program that handles expedited customs clearance when you land back in the U.S.
